Design for Learning

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the impact of innovative and effective teaching and learning strategies, learning activities, technologies and assessment strategies through an in-depth understanding of the process and practice of Design for Learning
  • Evaluate strategies that create new opportunities for supporting diverse learners to engage with learning in different contexts including prior learning, facilitating learner agency, self-regulation and collaboration
  • Critically reflect on practice using Design for Learning principles to modify teaching approaches to address the needs of individuals and groups of learners
  • Coordinate learner growth using design for learning principles through regular critical feedback including assessments and support them to use this information critically to guide further learning

6.0 Presentation

Share the process you have carried out across this course in gathering student data. You will actively respond to this data by exploring, implementing and evaluating the impact of relevant design for learning strategies within your classroom. Through analysing the data you have gathered, while tracking three selected learners from one of your classes, you will demonstrate an understanding of your learners’ strengths, interests, needs, identity, language and culture. You will identify specific challenges that your learners are facing and critically reflect on your own teaching practice in relation to these areas.

6.0 Summative Assessment

Marker's Notes: Kia ora Jessica. It was very difficult to hear your presentation. Consider screencasting your presentations, or using a mic, so that you can be heard. The collected and tracked evidence is impressive and provides clear insight into your practice and your learners experience of this. You sumarise student needs and conclude that agency and differentiation are priorities. Critical reflection is discussed briefly. Further emphasis on this would be beneficial. Overall this is a coherrent, focused and accurate assessment focused on student achievement and wellbeing.

7.1 Artifact Proposal

Share an Artifact Proposal for feedback with peers on the MTEL course. This proposal will describe how your artifact will respond to the identified learning needs of one or more of three students you will be tracking, through improving your teaching approaches, learning activities, and incorporating strategies for developing learner capability. Proposals incorporating learning activities and strategies could consider aspects such as accessing prior knowledge, collaboration, self-regulation and developing learner agency.

7.1 Ungraded Assessment

7.2 Artifact

Create your discussed artifact from Assessment # 7.1. This completed artifact will respond to the identified learning needs of individual students through improved teaching approaches, learning activities, and incorporating strategies for developing learner capability. Artifacts incorporating learning activities and strategies could consider aspects such as accessing prior knowledge, collaboration, self-regulation and developing learner agency.

7.2 Summative Assessment

Marker's Notes: Kia ora Jessica. This submission demonstrates a shift in pedagogy to build more independence, and interdependence. It is pleasing to see that there are scaffolds built into this artifact. In saying this, however, it would be beneficial for you to include more relevant theory to support your pedagogical decision making. It would also be beneficial to outline the benefits the learners have with this approach to learning i.e what is the achievement data showing? Are they engaging? Has this artifact met the needs of the identified learners? How? Why? This artifact has huge potential to enable the development of student agency through a differentiated approach. Well done!

8.0 Contribution

Contribute to a peer’s artifact by providing critical feedback and then reflecting on the quality of the feedback you have given through the rubric.

8.0 Summative Assessment

Marker's Notes: Kia ora Jessica. You have constructively, and comprehensively provided feedback for Amanda’s proposal. You have thought about the impact that your feedback could have on Amanda’s artifact and identify that you could have provided more theoretical based advice\questioning. Your feedback is both critical and affirming without pushing your ideas on the design of the artifact. For future submissions,as you have already identified it would be beneficial to include a literature-based approach to support your critique.
